Tuesday Trails: El Alto

Tuesday Trails El Alto

Spending most of our wintertime in AZ, we usually start to make our way back to the northwest by going through Utah, Oregon, and Washington. However, last spring, we decided to go a little further to the east and see what Wyoming had to offer a couple of dirtbag mountain bikers like us. The riding area called Curt Gowdy had been mentioned at least a couple of times by friends who also travel fulltime. They kept saying, “You guys will love the trails there!”

Finally, we made it to Curt Gowdy State Park near Cheyenne & Laramie – WY.  It definitely did not disappoint! In fact, we camped one night in the park and two nights outside the park on US Forest land (for free). The terrain is best described as steep ups/downs in and around huge granite boulders with optional lines galore!

There are 30 named trails with approximately 25mi (40km) worth of riding. The double black diamond “El Alto” (pictured), “Canyons” (with jumps and drops!), and “Slabz” were our favorites. Although, the intermediate trails were worthy of a rip too. Bring your high altitude lungs because it’s around 7,000ft (2,000m) at Curt Gowdy and beware those after ride beers will pack a punch!
