BikePark Wales is the first large-scale commercial bike park in the UK, bringing the concept of Whistler Bike Park to the South Wales valleys! It is quickly establishing itself as the premier purpose-built mountain bike destination in Britain, with trails designed to suit all rider abilities and all types of mountain biking. BikePark Wales is part of the Cognation project that is investing in mountain biking throughout South Wales and is responsible for a number of other trail locations. The bike park has a long list of support partners including Mercedes Vito Sport and Trek bikes, who stock their fleet of very capable rental bikes. And to justify it's status as a 'gravity' bike park, BikePark Wales has a constant vehicle uplift service using mini-bus with towed trailers for the bikes. They run 3 vehicles on the weekend and on busy days, which means there's a regular fast route to the top of the hill, and the number of 'laps' you can ride is equivalent to bike parks with a chairlift upload!

The trails at BikePark Wales are suitable for riders of all abilities and one thing they can guarantee is fun! There is a selection of trails suited specifically for DH bikes but the majority of the trails at the park are rideable on a decent mid travel trail bike. Difficulty levels vary from easy green trails suitable for families through to extremely difficult black and double black level trails. Designed and built by the Back On Track Trail building Team, their number one focus was sustainability. South Wales suffers from some wet weather so the trail drainage had to be excellent to keep riders shredding all day, every day. And they certainly achieved this, with Bike Park Wales open to riders 364 days a year - they only take Christmas day off!

Planning for the park began way back in 2008 when the BikePark Wales team realised that the UK and South Wales in particular was desperately in need of a facility of this kind to take the sport to the next level. Fortunately both Forestry Commission Wales and Merthyr Tydfil CBC shared this vision and under the Cognation umbrella they have provided fantastic support to make this project possible. And there's a lot more to come in the future too...
